Sonja Cousar, MA, NCC, LPC

Psychotherapist\Licensed Mental Health Counselor

“Do you often feel weighed down by feelings of anxiety or find it difficult to make friends and experience loneliness regularly as a result?”

I am here to provide you with support

I am a dedicated and adaptable mental health counselor with more than 11 years of experience.

If you are open, come talk to me; together, we will work on strategies that allow you to address the root causes of your difficulties and build meaningful social connections. When human beings experience trauma or severe life stressors, it is not uncommon for their lives to unravel. My great passion is bringing healing to people who have been through a traumatic or stressful experience. I have experience working in prisons, school settings, and abuse centers as well as with adolescent substance abuse and military families. I know that no single approach is the right one for every individual, so I have been trained in a range of modalities, including behavior therapy, play therapy, trauma-informed therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

What should someone know about working with you?

In the first session, we will complete an assessment and gather information. I secure information from a basic genogram, covering your history in the areas of family, conflict in the home, stability, struggles with income, substance use, culture, trauma, previous mental history or family history, school, and abuse. I empower individuals to overcome personal obstacles to improve their relationships by using clinically-tested and evidence-based interventions. I also take a direct approach with my clients, never sugar-coating or telling them what they want to hear; I focus on what they need to hear to achieve the results they desire.

What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?

I have a certificate in anger management and ADHD and I am working on one in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). I have training in behavioral therapy, client-centered therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trust-based relational intervention (TBRI), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I use a holistic approach to mental health that embraces mind, body, and spirit.

How do your core values shape your approach to therapy?

I believe understanding race, ethnicity, and culture (including one’s own) is necessary to appreciating the diversity of human dynamics and treating all clients effectively. Incorporating cultural competence into treatment improves therapeutic decision-making and offers alternative ways to define and plan a treatment program that is firmly directed toward progress and recovery.

What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?

I am excited about the normalization of seeking help, the increased access to services, and the increased awareness of the importance of prioritizing mental health.

“If so, come talk to me; together, we will work on strategies that allow you to address the root causes of your difficulties and build meaningful social connections.”
